The all-new Stuttering Severity Instrument–Fifth Edition (SSI-5) is a reliable and valid norm-referenced stuttering assessment that can be used for both clinical and research purposes. It measures stuttering severity in both children and adults by assessing the frequency of stuttering during speaking and oral reading tasks, the duration of stuttering-
related disfluencies, and behaviors associated with stuttering.
The stuttering frequency scores for the speaking and oral reading tasks are expressed in percent syllables stuttered and transformed into converted scores of 1–9. The duration of five stuttering-related disfluencies is timed to the nearest one hundredth of a second (up to two decimal places), averaged, and transformed to converted scores of 1–9. The behaviors associated with stuttering are rated by the examiner, and the associated behavior’s total raw score is transformed to converted scores of 1–9. Examiners also rate their impression of an examinee’s speech during the assessment process, and self- and parent ratings of speech fluency can also be obtained.
The converted scores are summed and result in two severity scores: Stuttering Severity Without Oral Reading (for examinees of all ages) and Stuttering Severity With Oral Reading (for examinees 8 years and older). The test yields percentile ranks and severity levels for the severity scores and the rating scale total raw scores.
The test’s norms are based on an all-new sample of 233 individuals from 182 different zip codes. Studies of reliability and validity indicate that the SSI-5 is a highly reliable and valid measure of stuttering severity.
Access to the all-new SSI-5 Online Administration, Scoring, and Report System is now included with the purchase of each SSI-5 Complete Kit and with the purchase of every replacement pack of Examiner Record Booklets. This administration, scoring, and report system is a quick, efficient tool for (a) entering test session results; (b) online administration of the self- and parent rating scales; (c) transforming raw scores into converted scores, percentile ranks, severity scores, and severity levels; and (d) obtaining a standard summary report. Inclusion of the software eliminates the need to include scoring tables in the Examiner’s Manual and ensures accurate calculation of scores.
COMPLETE SSI-5 KIT INCLUDES: Examiner’s Manual, 50 Examiner Record Booklets, 50 Self-Ratings of Speech Fluency, 50 Parent Ratings of Speech Fluency, Speaking and Oral Reading Tasks Book, and access to the SSI-5 Online Administration, Scoring, and Report System. (©2027)
